The Beat

Jun 26, 2012

One thing that has made us proud over the years is how many people can call themselves scriptwriters because of Script Frenzy. Since 2007, the year Script Frenzy began, 85,000 total participants have taken on the audacious challenge of writing a 100-page script—churning out nearly 1.4 million pages of original plays, TV shows, movies, and graphic novels.

While those numbers are impressive, we’ve struggled in other ways to put on Script Frenzy. Script Frenzy’s participant numbers haven’t grown along with our other writing programs’, and that has affected our ability to raise enough funds to put on the event because we rely on donations from participants to host them. Approximately 16,500 writers took part in Script Frenzy this year compared to the more than 350,000 writers who participated in NaNoWriMo, Camp NaNoWriMo, and the Young Writers Program.

As much as we wish we could continue hosting Script Frenzy, the OLL board recently voted to end Script Frenzy because it was operating at a loss that was unsustainable. I want you to know that this was an incredibly difficult decision, and one that was carefully considered for several years, but we have to do it for the overall health of the organization.

Sparklers on ice cream cake, the smell of fresh cut grass, iced lattes, puppies, baby giraffes, and bite-size squares of dark chocolate—these are a few of our favorite things. The only thing we love more than all those things combined is our Municipal Liaisons and the amazing job they do during the Frenzy. Our incredible volunteers bring a huge amount of joy and support to the Frenzy experience for our writing communities around the world.

Just like a pit crew on a racing team, our MLs are an integral part of making sure Script Frenzy is a dynamite experience for the Frenzy folk. They work hard in so many ways: they cheer us on, organize parties and write-ins, and distribute regional email updates about Script Frenzy happenings for starters.

Municipal Liaisons are the heart and soul of the Frenzy, and our hats are off to you! We love you so very much—thank you for being so spectacular!

If you would like to personally thank your ML, feel free to send them an email, or post a special thank you in the We Love Our MLs forum. We’re sure they’d love to hear from you.

Thanking you again,
Sandra

Hi Scriptwriters,

Even though the writing has officially stopped, Script Frenzy still has a ton of stuff coming up in the next few weeks. Be sure to check your area’s Regional Lounge for details on Wrap Parties in your region. Next week, we’ll post final totals on participants, winners, and combined page counts.

Winners, be sure to check out the Special Offers from Sponsors page to collect your goodies from Scrivener, Storyist, and the Writers Store. We also have a world of great resources as you tackle revision, so check out the Writers Resources page for more info.

Commemorate your accomplishment, too! During May, all Frenzy merchandise will be 25% off. So drop by the store, and pick from some swank vintage Script Frenzy swag.

Big thanks to everyone who donated this year. Script Frenzy and the Young Writers Program are both grassroots events that are run primarily on donations. Your generosity has made all the difference in our fundraising efforts. You are wonderful, and we love you!

If you haven’t donated yet, please take a moment to make a difference to writers and students around the world through the Frenzy. As a special incentive, we teamed up with The Writers Store and came up with an excellent way to help one lucky Frenzy participant receive coaching and feedback on his or her script.

We're randomly drawing to give away one Script Frenzy/Writers Store Script Development prize bundle to one lucky winner who donates at the $25-and-above level before June 1, 2012, 11:59 (PST). Toss your name into the hat and donate today.

Hello Frenziers,

Thank you for taking part in the sixth year of the Frenzy. It’s mind-blowing to know that, over the past 30 days, 16,000 of us wrote alongside each other all around the world. Whether you wrote 3, or 45, or 60 pages in April, what matters most is that you made time to write, and that makes you a winner. So congratulations! We applaud you!

I’m happy to announce that this year we had more than 1,861 writers cross the 100-page mark. Visit the Winner’s page to see the long list of the bold writers who took on the challenge of writing a 100-page script in April and won! Congratulations, Script Frenzy 2012 winners!

As for immediate next steps: spend time with the people you neglected last month, and catch up on your sleep! Then focus on the rewrite. Stop by our Revision Frenzy page, and the Script Frenzy and Beyond forums for tips on how to tackle this task. You can also find more information on next steps by checking out our I Wrote A Script, Now What? page.

Hi Frenziers!

We have less than 6 hours until FADE OUT, and we have 1,503 winners already! Our page count validator is hard at work confirming winners every hour.

This is so exciting! Who knows how many writers will cross the finish line?

Not sure how to validate your final page-count?

Here's a list of the steps you’ll need to take to ensure that the winning process goes smoothly:

1. Convert your script to PDF. If you haven't done it before, it's easier than you think. See our FAQ for how to make the conversion with online tools or your word-processing program.

2. Put your script into the Page Count Validator. In the "Page Count" section of the Writer Info page, browse for and select the PDF file containing your script.

Hi Scriptwriters!

It’s April 30th! Can you believe it? It's the last day to win Script Frenzy!

This month you drank copious amounts of coffee, and sacrificed countless hours of free time to write your script. Now is definitely not to the time to stop writing because you’re almost there.

It’s time to dig deep and knock those final pages out, so you can reach your one hundredth page. Let’s cross that finish line together!

Hi Frenziers!

We have less than 30 hours until FADE OUT, and right now 16,208 writers have written 270,390 pages! That’s fantastic! Last year’s total was 358,214 pages. Let’s beat that goal!

Don’t forget to set your Time Zone, so winning doesn’t cut off early for you. Remember, the page-count validator stops counting pages on April 30 at Midnight according to your local time.

Click on My Script Frenzy and then Edit Account Settings. Scroll down to find the Time Zone drop down menu and select your local time, then click submit so it saves your changes.

Keep on writing!

Sandra

The last few days, I’ve been hearing the Rocky theme song wafting through the air, no matter where I go. I know the tune signals that many Script Frenzy writers are making a come-from-behind bid to finish their 100-page scripts.

I’m at page 80, so don’t worry, I’m with you.

Here’s one thing I know, though: We can do it.

Drink an extra cup of coffee. Prepare for a late night of writing if need be. Sometimes the drama of a deadline can spark the best creativity.
