The Beat

May 18, 2010

Dear Script Frenzy Participant,

As of June 1, our donation calendar flips over to Script Frenzy 2011. That means there are just two weeks left for you to donate to Script Frenzy 2010 and collect this year's donor goodies. (If you donate after June 1, you'll receive 2011 donor goodies next year.)

The Writers Store has generously contributed some writerly packages that we'll be raffling off to everyone who donates to Script Frenzy 2010. (If you donated between June 1, 2009 and June 1, 2010 you are eligible.)*

The raffle prizes–which are in addition to the awesome donor goodies from HQ–are:

  1. Five donors will win a "Writer" hat, The Pocket Screenwriting Guide: 120 Tips for Getting to FADE OUT, and The Hero's Two Journeys DVD.
  2. Two donors will win Screenplay Development Notes from The Story Specialists.

We're a small nonprofit and our events run on the love and support of people like you.

Dear Frenzy folks,

On Saturday, May 15, the Office of Letters and Light is moving!

The new address is:
3354 Adeline Street, Berkeley, CA 94703

Our telephone number (510-628-0327) and fax (510-380-5220) will remain the same.

Our new space not only has functioning heating and cooling and hot water, but it also has a fridge. That's right. We will be the proud owners of a refrigerator with a freezer and ice trays and everything! In honor of our move, we're running a "Name our Fridge" contest over on the Script Frenzy Facebook page.

Frenzied Forever! Your Guide to Conquering PSFB
Chapter 3 - I Wrote a Script, Now What?

Now that you've spent a month building a story, creating characters, and layering in subplots, what are you going to do with them?

We've collected a few ideas and put them in one convenient spot for you: The I Wrote a Script, Now What? page.

There are tips on registering, revising, and bringing your masterpiece into the world.

As you turn your scripts into plays, movies, comic books, TV shows, etc., tell us about them! Send an email to: hello [at] scriptfrenzy [dot] org.

Good luck!
Jen

Five people will win a "Writer" hat, The Pocket Screenwriting Guide: 120 Tips for Getting to FADE OUT, and The Hero's Two Journeys DVD.

It was quite a month! We had over 21,000 writers take part in Script Frenzy this year.

A huge congratulations to the 2,078 winners! You all rock and deserve gold stars, wrist massages, and hot chocolate with marshmallows. (The big marshmallows. Not just the tiny ones in the packet.)

I am so proud of everyone!

Tomorrow we'll be posting our "I Wrote a Script, Now What?" that will point out some good things to do with your newly-created masterpiece. Until then, please celebrate all that you've accomplished!

We are all gearing up to celebrate and laugh at the Headquarters Wrap Party happening this Saturday night. Here are all the details. Everyone is welcome, so invite your support crew and anyone you know who likes to laugh. The very funny folks from Killing My Lobster will be there to perform 2-page excerpts from local participant's scripts.

If you're planning on attending, you'll need (and want) to get send in your pages by 5 PM on Wednesday. (hello [at] scriptfrenzy [dot] org)

If you aren't in the San Francisco Bay Area, be sure to look up your local wrap party. It is time to celebrate!

A giant thank you to all our participants and Municipal Liaisons for making Script Frenzy such an exciting, inspiring, creative, and crazy place to be in April.

More exciting stuff soon!

So much frenzied love,
Jen

Dear Scriptwriter,

Right now, you are in one of two camps. You are either feeling pretty good about this 100-page challenge thing and are already booking your next adventure (I've heard Everest is nice this time of year). Or, you're way behind and are pretty sure this was a terrible, horrible idea from the start.

If you're in camp one, please send a postcard from your destination.

If you're in camp two, please keep reading.

I have devised a short quiz for you. The results will help you figure out how to spend what's left of Script Frenzy 2010.

As a result of participating in Script Frenzy this April:

  1. How many pages have you written that you would not have otherwise written?
  2. How many hours have you carved out to think about your story?
  3. How many characters have come to life in your imagination that would not have had a fighting chance in say, July?
  4. How many lines of dialogue have you written?
  5. How many cups of coffee have you had?

Please add up your answers.

Dear Writer,

Well, Script Frenzy is almost over. Here at headquarters, we've had a crazy, wonderful month watching stories take shape and page counts soar all around the world.

We're a 501(c)(3) nonprofit passionate about getting kids and adults to discover their voices and develop their gifts. The money to pay for our events comes from people like you. People who make a point of supporting the organizations that make their world a better (and more creative) place.

If Script Frenzy brightened your April, or helped you pull off something you might not have done otherwise, I ask you to make a tax-deductible donation to help us do it again next year. If you've already donated, we thank you! If you haven't yet donated, our secure online Donation Station can be found at: https://store.lettersandlight.org

There are also instructions there for donating by check. The amount you give doesn't matter—$10 is wonderful! $25 is a dream! We've currently received donations from 2.7% of our participants, and we're hoping to see that number climb to 5% here in the final days of the event.

With your help, it will.

Thank you so much for your support! And congrats on your script!

Love,

Chris Baty
Executive Director

This past week, we've been putting the finishing touches on a tool called Writer Maps that enables you to see writing events—and map your own writing spot and writing time—in your area. You can find and post events up to three days in advance so you can connect with fellow scriptwriters nearby.

During the last week of the Frenzy, we’re opening up this tool to everyone for testing, and we would love your feedback. The map lives here, along with detailed instructions on how it works. There is also a forum set up for your input.

We’re hoping to roll this out for the 2011 event, but we need your help. This feature will be live for the rest of the year as we continue to fine-tune, and you can continue to meet up with scriptwriters. Check it out, and let us know what you think!
