So, I'm writing two plays because I got bored with the first one. My second one, Chronicles of Love, is a romance.
This is an excerpt from 4:510. Stage directions are in (parentheses) because I can't get them into (italics) here.
JACK: Clara, listen to me. We don’t have to do this. We can stop right now. I’ll finish my term as president and then we’ll run away and live together. We’ll be nineteen, Clara, adults. We can get married; have a good life. I don’t want to live without you, Clara. Isn’t that what you want too; to be together forever?
CLARA: Yes, Jack, I want that. I want it just as much as you do, but we can’t do that. This isn’t about us, Jack; this is about the world. We have the fate of nine billion people resting on our shoulders. We can’t just abandon them. Everyone wants to change the world, Jack, but you and me, we can actually do it. We can make the world into a place where there is no war and no hunger, a place where every disease is curable and no one is ever lonely, a place where the sad are comforted and every little girl gets a pony; we can make the world a beautiful place, Jack. We can’t give that up just to be together. This is true love, Jack, this is forever. No matter how far you go from me or how long it’s been since I’ve seen your face, I’ll always love you. You won’t really be gone. There will only be a thin wall separating us. When you miss me, just think of me and I’ll hear you calling. And Jack, I’ll miss you too.
JACK: Clara, I, well I don’t know how to say this, but, but (he begins to cry, silent tears sliding down his cheeks)
CLARA: (Wiping his tears away) Why bother speaking? (She pulls him forward and they begin a hug that ends in a sweet and perfect kiss)
JACK: Good luck, Clara.
CLARA: Goodbye Jack.
(JACK pushes a button and the room begins to hum, lights flashing.)
JACK: Farewell, Princess Clara, may there be a day when I will again hold you in my arms.
CLARA: Farewell, my sweet Prince Jack. The people of this world may be happy, but as for me, I will never be truly happy until you are again by my side.
(The lights grow brighter and the humming more intense. Light surrounds CLARA, blind the audience, and when you can again see the spot where she stood, it is empty.)
JACK: (to the spot where she once stood) Goodbye, my lady. If only- (stops himself) Well, “if only” won’t help anything now. This is my world and, for better or for worse, this is where I have to stay. I have to stay strong, but- (puts his hands over his heart, clutching. His face contorts with pain. He begins to sob) Clara, oh my dear, sweet, brilliant Clara, will I never see you again?
